TOP 3 REASONS TO SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR CAT

  1. They make better companions. They are less likely to roam, fight, run away or bite.
  2. They are less likely to get certain types of cancer.
  3. When you prevent unwanted kittens from being born, you help reduce the number of cats that ultimately end up in shelters.

If a male and female cat and their offspring are left to breed on their own they would produce 2,097,152 kittens in 10 years.

TOP 5 REASONS TO FIX YOUR DOG

1. Your dog will not contribute to the massive dog overpopulation. Last year, there were 8 million pets who went into shelters. Only half of them made it out. Spaying and neutering is the #1 way to help this growing problem.

2. If neutered young, male dogs are less aggressive and generally have less aggression-related behavior problems including marking, humping, guarding toys and food and dog aggression. According to the ASPCA, over 70% of dog fights are from unneutered male dogs.

3. Females do not experience heat cycles, meaning a much easier time for you! Females in heat can become territorial, cry, howl and attract a lot of male attention. It can be a recipe for disaster if there is an unfixed male dog in the house!

4. Spaying reduces the chances of breast cancer in female dogs. In male dogs, neutering prevents testicular cancer (if done before 6 months).

5. Dogs, especially females, who are fixed live longer, healthier lives.

Medications used to prevent heartworm infections are called preventives. Preventives kill the heartworm larvae before they have a chance to grow and mature into adult heartworms. A number of heartworm preventives are available to pet owners today. Some heartworm preventives contain additional ingredients that will control other parasites, such as roundworms or hookworms. A monthly preventive should be given to all pets. Remember that mosquitoes can get indoors, so even though your pet may not go outside, he is still susceptible. Monthly preventatives can range in price but can be as cheap as $3.50 per month for a medium sized dog. In comparison the treatment for heart worms starts at $450 (and goes up depending on the size of the dog) , can be dangerous for the animal and can be painful.

Click HERE for information on the different ways to treat heart worms in dogs.
Currently there are NO treatments for feline heart worms.

The below links are reviews of some dog foods you can buy on or off base in Okinawa. As a rescue we prefer to feed dog and cat food that has more protein (dogs are carnivores after all). A good rule of thumb is to look at the first 5 ingredients and make sure at least the 1st ingredient is meat.

INTERESTED IN FEEDING A RAW FOOD DIET PLEASE READ BELOW
These
raw dog food recipes are not necessarily 100 percent balanced or meant to be fed every day. They are not necessarily recommended by a veterinarian. They are not necessarily right for your particular dog. These are just some real examples of real raw meals real dog owners have fed their dogs.

Raw meat/veggie mix
This is for a 100-pound Kuvasz, twice per day:
1/4 C. plain yogurt
1/4 -1/2 C. chopped or ground veggies (carrots, leafy greens, apples, broccoli or peas)
A skinned chicken leg quarter with bone (chicken leg, thigh and some of the back, which usually weighs
about 1 lb)
If the meat does not have a lot of bone, sometimes owners will add a calcium tablet.

Raw beef/organ/veggie mix
This is for an active springer/pointer mix:
2 C. raw ground beef or chicken (from local meat shop)
1 C. organ meat (from grocery store)
1 C. vegetables/fruit
Rotate the kinds of organ meat and veggies you use. Blend the organ meat and veggies and mix with the already ground meat. Add an egg if desired.
